Line art for an illustration I am currently working on. You'll not see it finished for at least a week or two because I have things to take care of first!

For those not in the know, Akira Toriyama is the mangaka responsible for a slew of manga including Dr.Slump, Cowa, Neko-Maijin and of course Dragon Ball.

What people don't understand or rather don't know about Mr. Toriyama is that he is in fact an accomplished cartoonist. A natural story teller it's not surprising that his work manages to surpass borders or language. He speaks directly to his audience with a base visual language. A universal language.

His style is alive, vivid and distinct. This distinctiveness is often responsible for people misunderstanding his work.

amazing, love your lines and your shapes, but isn't Dragon Quest the better selling and more influential series he's worked on?

Well I suppose 'round here people are less inclined to rpgs and more towards super flashy anime. The general Canadian population is likely to know DBZ over DQ. It's a total SHAME to be sure.

I never was into DBZ to be honest. I recalled I was 8 when I first saw his work from a friend in school brought a toriyama art book from Japan and I was more drawn into Dragon Quest then Dragon Ball art. I mean I do enjoy those fun friends photos of everyone piled into a small car, but generally the later DBZ wasteland art and two muscle dudes screaming at each other really just dragged the style of that series for a long time. Although even now looking at the new work Toriyama's work in Dragon Quest 9 it looks just bright colorful and cheerful adventure. BUT HONESTY..... His best work is Chrono Trigger.... I am Bias :B

My absolute favourite work of his is a manga called Cowa - [link] He did it after DBZ as a way to chillax I believe. Drawn more simply because of a hand injury. It's really charming.

Chrono Trigger was hecka great too oh and totally a Paladin in DQIX btw ;D
